The Maputo Port Fruit Terminal (MPFT), a newly registered Mozambique Company to establish a new Citrus Terminal in the Port of Maputo, started its operations yesterday, after having received approval from PPECB (South Africa’s Official Perishable Produce Export Certification Agency).
The terminal will be operated as an ambient store for 2022, with plans to expand to modern cold storage facilities in 2023. All typical warehousing services will be offered in this facility of more than 2400 square meter, and both containers and conventional shipping can be accommodated.
“Although the terminal will start operating with far smaller volumes, a total capacity of 300 containers per week will easily be achievable”, said the spokesperson for the new terminal. The first fruit was received from the 7th April, and the first vessel to leave with citrus will be the CMA CGM operated Africa Two with estimated departure date on the 10thApril.
The main markets targeted this year for this operation are South East Asia, Middle East and Russia.
The Port of Maputo and many different stakeholders are happy with the return of citrus to the port and are in collaboration to ensure a successful operation. “We are working with all different stakeholders in the transport corridor, including customs, to ensure a smooth border-crossing and short transit times for this perishable commodity”, stated Osório Lucas, CEO at MPDC.
